| Here I am again. Sitting in a PC-bong after having
returned from a really long field trip to somewhere in
South Korea. Today was a special Korean Holiday,
Constitution Day, I believe, and so we had the day off. Of
course, when you spend that day off with your boss and
all your co-workers it does start to feel like work, but
I supposed we still had a good time. The journey began
after classes on Tuesday when we all piled into a van for
a three hour drive to Mr. Kim's grandfathers house near
the beach in some part of Korea. Can't recall the name of
the city for the life of me. The drive was uneventful and we arrived in one piece a
group of fairly hungry teachers as most of us had not
eaten since lunch. Since the hungry were many it was
decided that the BBQ scheduled for tomorrow would take
place right away and the Korean BBQ was set up. It was at
this point that we learned that although there were
copious amounts of food to be had, there was not, in
fact, anything for me to eat. So after drinking a few
beers, and then being offered a tomato (hey it was better
then nothing) I watched as the others ate to their fill,
and eventually decided it was off to bed. Mr. Kim was
interested in going out of Soju, and since I wasn't
tired, and was hungry and figured my chances of getting
food would increase if I did not go to sleep, I went
along to a traditional Soju bar, where I did managed to
land some French Fries and the beginning of a hangover. That night we slept upstairs in the grandfathers
house, a very nice place with a beautiful garden, all the
trees bonsiaed and manicured, and surrounded on all sides
by rice fields, very pretty. The only draw back being
that there were no beds and the, um, mattress provided
for us to sleep on were little more then quilted
blankets. Since I had no pillow, I rolled mine up and
just went to sleep on the solid floor, I had my blankie
so it didn't really matter. We woke up around nine, had breakfast (made by the
Chinese-Korean house maid, and apparently not done quite
correctly according to Mr. Kim) and then set out for the
beach, where we spent the next several hours laying
around in the sun, swimming in the very very very cold
water (which I only did twice for about 15 minutes a
turn) reading and eventually BBQ-ing again, still no food
for little ol me. Mr. Kim did start digging up clams in
the ocean and brought them in, put them on the grill and
insisted I eat them. They weren't bad. I've never had
clams that were that fresh. I have to admit though my
stomach is off, and I'm hoping that I don't get a spat of
sickness from eating those tasty little treats. Either way we eventually finished up, and headed back,
stopping at a temple to eat Bi-bim-bap, and noodles.
There was a very interesting side dish served, some wild
mountain vegetable, that was quite yummy. It was served
in such quantity I really had to wonder if it was wild,
but who cares. The BBB was a little spicy for my taste
but I'm none the worse for wear. Not much else to relate. I'll let you know how things
turn out with the clams, |
