Well, out of the kindness of his heart (and the belief that I am underpaid for the amount of work I do) Jason graciously offered to put up the money for myself and Lily (since she's new and broke) to go on the trip. So off we went to Gimpo....We arriaved there late on Wednesday night after having had several beers on our roadtrip between the three of us. Koreans are terribly laid back about drinking and although they are very strict about drunk driving (.005 is too drunk to drive) they don't mind all the passengers in the car drinking themselves silly.

So we arrived at sometimes after midnight and went to the hotel first to check out our rooms. The hotel was called the SeaSide Manor and overlooked the ocean, it had a beautiful view and was for the most part perched by itself on the top of a hill. The "two big rooms" we were supposed to have gotten turned out to be rather small and a third room was aquired for comfort.

After putting stuff in rooms we ventured out to the windy and therefore very cold beach for a midnight barbeque. Actually, we found out we could not go onto the beach after dark because the S. Korean military was running manuevers, and in general looking for N. Korean ships that might be trying to infilitrate. While at the edge of the beach, fairly close anyway, we could see that the entire horizon, and in fact much of the night sky was aglow. In the harbor, out at sea were hundreds of boats ( counted about 70) that all were shining incredibly powerful bright lights to attract squid. It was at the point that I realized as we were driving up to the beach that the along the road had been curtains and curtains of squid hanging up to dry. You wouldn't think there could be that much squid in the ocean, but apparently there is more than enough because the ships are out everynight scouting for squid. It was an odd sight. The lights were so bright it was almost difficult to appreciate the really rather glorious view of the crescent moon low on the horizon with Jupiter just a bit off to the left side, quite beautiful. It was impossible to see any of the other stars...

We had a very chilly barbeque and headed back to the hotel, where the floors were heated and the room got a bit warm so sleeping became difficult. We got up rather early the next day and headed out to go sight seeing. We went to see the two hand sculptures, one in the ocean, one on land, facing each other that symbolize the quest to reunify the two Korea's. We also went to a lighthouse museum where I learned a great deal about lighthouses in Korean (a might unhelpful that). Afterwords we had a wonderfullly fishy lunch, and it was announced that we would be going out to fish for our dinner. That said we journeyed out to the harbor where a fishing boat had been rented to take us out fishing. We boarded and had a wonderfully bumpy high speed ride out to sea, crashing against some rather large swells as it had gotten rather windy. (nothing over five or six feet, but some rather large stuff, nonetheless). The high speed trip lasted about ten minutes and was really quite rocky. After that I was able to sit on the edge at the head of the boat (someone who knows something about boats can provide me with correct lingo) and we motored around for a bit riding up and down the waves and looking for fish. Alas, the water was so choppy that the fishing was dismal and after two hours out we did not manage to catch anything.

We motored back to the harbor where the Captain got us some fresh from the ocean fishies that someone else had caught only seconds earlier, gutted them, cleaned them, and there on the beach we ate them. It was really quite good sashimi, but if you have ever had sashimi you might know that it really has very little taste anyway. However, like the clams on the last trip, it is really fun to be able to eat things just caught that way.

When we arriaved back we found that the half of our party that had remained landbound and managed to aquire and drink rather a large amount of Soju and they insisted that we barbeque, as they had to wait much longer (about an hour longer) than they had at first thought for us.

We had a nice barbeque and took the scenic route back to Daegu. Driving up and down winding cliffs and watching the beautifully pink and purple skies as the sun set over the ocean. It was all quite lovely. When we arriaved back in Daegu we had fruitshakes, and parted company, promising to meet this evening after work for beer which should be pleasant enough.
