| It's another cool quiet day here in Daegu, South
Korea. The strange thing about Daegu, city of three
million, is that it is so quiet. I can be on the streets
at 9 in the morning and be completely by myself. I can be
on the street at 12 in the afternoon and be totally
alone. And don't get me started about the drunken stumble
home at 5 am. Nothing in this city opens before 10 which
can be a pain if one wants to do some early morning
shopping before heading into work. Have walked through
and driven through several rush hours in Chicago, it is
mind boggling to me to be living in a city that is
essentially like a big village. Of course I don?' live in
the middle of downtown which stays open late and always
has lots of people, but I don?' live that far away from
it. Still, it's strange. Convenient thing is you can always find something open
all night, even here in Gesoungdong where there are never
any people out. There are always late night Dok-Boki
stands which makes getting dinner easy, and there is
always a video-bong or pc-bong open for those 4am
mornings when one has nothing better to do. The good
goddess knows I've taken advantage of that on more than
one occasion. I had a longish weekend which included much
recovering from alcohol and seeing my friend Sook-yung
(the Korean Sara) for the first time in a month, which
was quite nice. She has invited me to go to the market
with her on Saturday to by the material to make my winter
coat, and has offered her sewing machine to me for the
day so I can put it together. She has also invited me
with her to Pusan this weekend where the Asian games are
currently taking place. So on Sunday I will take a one
day whirlwind trip to Pusan and I shall let you know how
that goes. (The rumor mill has it that Mr. Kim would like
to buy me a sewing machine for my birthday so I have put
off procuring one for myself as of this writing.) In the meantime I have an early work meeting today
which should be pleasant enough. I convinced Mr. Kim to
move them to Wednesday when all of us have fewer classes,
which makes having a meeting a bit easier. He has also
been convinced to purchase a pizza to alleviate meeting
attitude. That is very nice. I'm quite happy I've gotten my winter clothes as it's
been more than a little nippy here, we've had one good
frost, but the mosquitoes, however, seem to be very hardy
and have not yet given up the fight or the urge to pester
sleepers. I had quite a nasty fight with one the other
night which continued, after several attempts to kill it,
to try to bite me in my nose. Lily has been losing sleep
because of her battle with them, and even Mini-Sue (Mr.
Kim's daughter) has acquired a nasty bite on the cheek. Enough rambling. I'm homesick this week. Missing
people.
